While having one of my very important and necessary conversations on my daily group chat with friends, we got on the topic of fragrance since I had proudly announced my latest purchase of Chanel N°5.
It was clearly the highlight of my day. A brand new shiny bottle of perfume can have a girl smiling from chandelier earring to stud, and this bottle was particularly special since I’ve always wanted it and never made the move to get it. Now it’s all mine!
During our conversation my friends had made it painfully clear that the way I use fragrance was, “weird and insane,” we’ll call them: Stephanie and Lauren.
***(Names have not been changed so to not protect their identities)***
I went on to discuss how it is I use my fragrance and how I feel each scent represents an event, mood or situation I may be getting ready for in life. Here’s the breakdown according to my favorite scents:
Story: I’ve had a long running affair with this fragrance, since my sophomore year in college when Angel took over all my senses at the Queens Center Mall
When I Wear It: Typically when I’m going out on the town, hitting a bar, party or generally know that there may be some drinking involved. To me this is my feel-good fragrance that reminds me of the days of barely any responsibility and fun. For anyone ever thinking of giving me a gift, anything by Angel will always win with me. (Ahem, the white leather case… what?)
Notes: Bergamot, Hedione, Helional, Honey, Dewberry, Red Berries, Vanilla, Caramel, Patchouli, Chocolate, Coumarin
Story: Working for Ralph Lauren Fragrances at L’Oreal had it’s perks, and one of them was RLB
When I Wear It: If I’m running errands on a long day then meeting up with a friend for lunch or cocktails. It’s more of a daily scent than special occasion for me. It’s soft enough and I feel like it goes with most of my casual outfits
Notes: Rose de Mai, Jasmine and Musk
Story: Another perk from Ralph. Midnight Romance has remained a staple in my rotation due to the soft scent and I’m a sucker for anything vanilla flavored or scented!
When I Wear It: Mostly on occasions like Happy Hour, light dinners and even have worn it on job interviews, it’s that subtle and perfect as an office fragrance
Notes: Pink Peony and Black Vanilla
Lolita Lempicka Original
Story: The brand’s first fragrance and one of my all-time favorites. I’ve been wearing it since it was gifted to me one particularly good-smelling Christmas Day in 2008
When I Wear It: Special occasions, weddings and anything that requires dressing up, family, friends and elegance. Also, no surprise that one of the notes is vanilla
Notes: Ivy, Aniseed, Violet, Amarena Cherry, Vanilla, Pralline, Tonka Bean, Iris and Musk
Story: The bottle that has etched itself into the pop art of pop culture and has become an icon of beauty and fashion has always been somewhat of a desire to me. Not to mention I’m a hardcore Marilyn Monroe fan and it’s famously known she’s given N°5 the plug of the century with her quote about the fragrance, which the brand used in 2013 in a beautifully crafted vintage-style ad that still gives me goosebumps.
“You know, they ask me questions. Just an example: “What do you wear to bed? A pajama top? The bottoms of the pajamas? A nightgown?” So I said, ‘CHANEL N°5,’ because it’s the truth… And yet, I don’t want to say ‘nude.’ But it’s the truth!”
The story of the fragrance has captivated me as I’ve just finished a Coco Chanel biography for my book club; more on that next week when I review the book. Recurring theme: vanilla. Shocker.
When I Wear It: I’m still figuring out its role in my life as this is an important decision, (obviously), but I may wear it when my mood is ultra chic or to bed
Notes: May Rose, Jasmine, Citrus, Aldehydes, Bourbon Vanilla
So now that I’ve plead my case: Is it “weird and insane” or can you relate? Sound off in the comments.
